Welcome to Science

We aim to provide a safe, caring environment in which all students can achieve their potential whilst equipping them with the skills and knowledge which will help them in their future. All pupils are individuals with their own learning styles and needs and so the curriculum has been chosen to ensure that all pupils are able to access information in order to be successful.

All staff within the department are passionate about the subject and this is apparent in the way the curriculum is delivered. In doing so we strive to facilitate all pupils to experience science as a meaningful, worthwhile activity which they will find useful throughout their lives.

Our pupils are encouraged to lead healthy lifestyles. This is achieved as part of the curriculum by teaching fitness and healthy eating. We believe that a healthy mind and body are essential for the future of our pupils.

FACILITIES

The department is composed of six specialist rooms designed as scientific laboratories. All have the facilities and equipment necessary to carry out practical activities safely. One of our laboratories currently contains a small network of computers and this is being extended in order for pupils to have increased access to ICT in science.

KS3 CURRICULUM

At Key Stage three the department follows the Exploring Science scheme of work. This scheme follows a spiral curriculum building on the major scientific concepts from one year to the next. It is designed to offer a full range of differentiated activities and worksheets in order that all pupils can access science regardless of ability.

KS4 CURRICULUM

The department is currently following the OCR Gateway science scheme of work. This course results in the pupils attaining one or two GCSEs in science. The course is examined in year 10 and 11 in January and June. Each year’s requirements also include a variety of ‘Can Do’ tasks and a ‘Science in the News’ report completed in lessons.
