Welcome to PE

Each pupil has the right to learn in a safe environment. All pupils are individuals with their own learning styles and needs. We therefore deliver a varied curriculum to suit all pupils.

In lessons pupils aim to raise their self esteem through a variety of individual and team based activities. We help pupils to gain qualities like cooperation, team work, communication, working with others in their lessons. Every pupil is encouraged to value the benefits of staying fit and living a healthy lifestyle – both during their school life and beyond. Above all, our department instills the notion that taking part in sport and physical activity is FUN!

FACILITIES

The facilities at Ash Green are superb. On school site we have to have a Four badminton Court Sports Hall, Two Indoor Cricket nets, Gymnasium and Fitness Room. Outside we also have two Netball Courts and a Basketball court and four Tennis Courts as well as a large grass area that caters for a football pitch, a rugby pitch. 2 training grid areas, a grass athletics running track, a rounders pitch, and a softball pitch.

KS3 CURRICULUM

At Key Stage 3 pupils have a broad and varied curriculum. Pupils are taught for two hours per week. In Year seven when pupils first enter the school they take part in an introduction to PE. All years in the Key Stage then experience lessons from: Gymnastics, Dance, Tennis, Basketball, Hockey, Football, Rugby Union, Netball, Cricket, Badminton, Trampolining, Rounders, Health Related Exercise, Outdoor Education, Athletics.

KS4 CURRICULUM

All pupils receive one hour of PE in Core time in Year 10 and 11. As of September 2007, pupils will be able to work towards either the JSLA Certificate in Core PE in Year 10. They will be doing this through the choice of activities and sports following the National Curriculum. The aim is for all pupils to gain a credited award in Core PE. JSLA pupils will have the opportunity to link in with the SSCO programme and help in local Primary schools.

GCSE PE

Physical Education at GCSE level is a very popular choice in Year 9. We have a high percentage of each year group following the GCSE PE option. Pupils follow the AQA GCSE Specification A and Games course. In their weekly GCSE PE timetable, pupils have two hours of theory and one hour of practical.

EXTRA CURRICULAR

We have an excellent extra curricular programme running throughout the year. We run clubs in the following team sports: Football - Girls and Boys, Cricket, Netball, Rounders, Athletics and Tennis. We also have very successful and well attended clubs in Trampolining, Badminton and Rugby. We also offer a range of ‘alternative’ PE clubs, such as Cheerleading, Aerobics and Fitness Training.

SSCO

We have a strong SSCO programme linking with Alderman Smith Sports College and a number of local primary schools. A number of tournaments and activities run throughout the year both at the primary schools and at Ash Green School. These include Athletics Days, Rugby Days and Tennis Days. Pupils in Year 10 and Year 11 are given the opportunity to become YOUNG SPORTS LEADERS in a wide range of sports to help support local primary schools in their delivery of PE.
